As of the 29th of March, as part of the UK unlocking from coronavirus restrictions, we will be able to restart group rides in all of our locations.
This is fantastic news for us and all of our members, who have been patiently waiting for the chance to ride with a group of friends, stop for a fat slice of cake and a well deserved beer afterwards.
Before outlining our plan for returning to group rides at the end of March, we want to say a massive thank you to all of our members who have been so awesome during such a difficult year.
You've all been fantastic, resourceful, cheerful, encouraging and kind this year. You're a true credit to the club and community and couldn't be a better representation of what we stand for and believe in.
Who knew that when we started doing all those Zwift rides back in March 2020, we'd only just be returning to a semblance of 'normal' riding? No time to dwell - let's get on with planning some proper group riding!
Rule of 6 - Groups of 6
The return to group riding in the UK is all based on the Govt/British Cycling advice, recently published in The Way Forward. Have a read for the full guidelines and plan.
The guidelines state that British Cycling clubs (that's us) can run group rides of up to 15 people, but after careful consideration and member feedback we are going to limit groups to 6 people in the short term.
This is to protect our members as much as possible, to avoid any undue altercations with the public who don't know the guidelines, and to make stopping for take away coffee/beer more straightforward.
We will monitor the ongoing situation and update the policy if needed. We only ever allow groups of max 10 anyway, so 6 is a perfectly fine number to get started with.
Member Group Rides:
Members can head to the members app/forum to check out some of the London group rides that are already being posted. More and more rides will be added on an ongoing basis, and members are always encouraged to post their own ride & route suggestions too.
Join the Community
Now is the perfect time to join our social cycling community. All new members get a 30 day free trial to sign up, download the app and get to know the system before group rides restart.
You can join a ride, chat to other members, explore the route database and access our member discount codes - like 10% off Parcours wheels and 20% off mobile bike maintenance.
Full details to start the free trial can be found here.
Trial Laps Sessions:
If you wish to try out a group ride first then we'd highly recommend joining one of our 'taster' laps sessions. These are super social, low commitment and open to all. It's a great way to get started. Click Here for full details.
To celebrate the great unlock, and to mark the Spring Classics, we've set up a bunch of London group rides for April. An excuse for a fun ride with good people, these Classics themed routes are a little different!
If you don't know anything about the Spring Classics, then check out our handy blog here.
- Ronde Van Londen (Sun 4th April) - take on the best cobbled roads in London and pay homage to the Tour of Flanders
- Essex Roubaix (Sun 11th April) - The Queen of the Classics, but in Epping Forest. The best roads, farm tracks and trails in the East.
- AmShere Gold Race (Sun 18th April) - Rolling hills and green hedgerows of Surrey not Holland. Same lovely riding & a great cafe stop!
- London - Brighton - London (Sun 25th April) Celebrate the oldest of the Classics (Liege Bastogne Liege) with an epic ride to the coast!
You can check out all of the above group rides, as well as our weekly laps and hill reps sessions and other weekend rides on the members app. Start the 30 day free trial for full access.
Group rides for other regions (Cambridge, Brighton, Birmingham) will be updated very soon. Brussels group rides are still ongoing in groups of 10 as per the local guidelines. Please head to the members app for more details.
If you're new to cycling or group riding then it can be daunting and you might think you've got a load of stupid questions. Rest assured - almost everyone feels like that when the start out, and there's no such thing as a stupid question. So get in touch if you're keen - you won't regret it!
Looking forward to seeing you on the road,
